Scandinavian bulk samples at Keivitsa

Vancouver — Along with a newly launched 10,000-metre drill program, Scandinavian Minerals (SGL-T) is carrying out a bulk-sampling program at its wholly owned Keivitsa nickel-copper-platinum group elements (PGE) property in northern Finland.

About 600 tonnes will be extracted from the sulphide nickel deposit for additional metallurgical testing, including a pilot-plan run scheduled for later this year aimed at improving recoveries of nickel and precious metals in the flotation circuits.

The infill drill program, now under way, will provide additional material for metallurgical testing.

Scandinavian Minerals is nearing completion of a prefeasibility study for the Keivitsa deposit, which is one of the largest mineral discoveries in Finland’s history. Studies are focused on the open-pit portion of the deposit to a depth of 300 metres, where 70 million tonnes grading 0.31% nickel, 0.43% copper, 0.01% cobalt, 0.15 gram gold, 0.22 gram palladium and 0.34 gram platinum have been estimated in the measured and indicated categories using a 0.2% nickel cutoff.

Resources to depths of 1,000 metres are substantially higher, at 287 million tonnes of 0.22% nickel and 0.29% copper, plus associated gold, cobalt and PGE values, using a 0.1% cutoff for nickel.

Scandinavian is proposing to develop an open-pit mine that would process about 3.5 million tonnes annually, and produce separate nickel and copper concentrates that would be sold to smelters. The prefeasibility study will include environmental studies in advance of applying for environmental and mining permits this summer.

The Keivitsa deposit is easily accessible by road, and is near water and hydroelectric power.

Scandinavian Minerals recently completed a $5.3-million private placement that will be used to further advance the Keivitsa project.
