Inco’s Garson awarded Canada’s top safety prize

Inco’s (N-T, N-N) Garson nickel mine was deemed Canada’s safest metal mine by claiming the John T. Ryan Trophy during the awards ceremony at the 108th annual meeting of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM).

With close to a zero frequency in reportable injuries, the Garson mine had the lowest lost-time accident rate of any metal mine in Canada last year.

“Bringing home this coveted award is a major accomplishment for our Garson team,” says Mark Cutifani, Inco’s president of North America and Europe. “Our people at Garson mine have done an amazing job working together — looking out for themselves and each other — to set new standards in safety.”

This is the second time Garson has won the National Ryan Trophy, the last time, however, was in 1945.

It also marks the second straight year in which an Inco mine has been named the safest in Canada, with Inco’s Birchtree nickel mine in Manitoba winning the Ryan Trophy last year.
