The master of science program in mineral exploration at Queen’s University will have a place set aside for a West African student thanks to a scholarship funded by Iamgold (IMG-T, IAG-N).
The $400,000 scholarship endowment, commemorating Iamgold founder Mark Nathanson and his wife Maria, will bring a West African student to the university each year for the master’s course, which consists of a 6-month preparatory term, two course-work terms and a project. Iamgold chief financial officer Grant Eady said the endowment reflects Nathanson’s “lifelong love affair with West Africa.”
Serigne Diang, a Senegalese geologist employed by Iamgold on its Bambadji project in Senegal, is the first recipient of the scholarship, and is currently completing the course work toward the degree.
