The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) has received the Industry Association Award for Environmental Performance, presented by the Vancouver-based Globe Foundation.
The award in part recognizes “Towards Sustainable Mining,” an initiative launched by the MAC to increase public trust in the industry’s ability to manage environmental and social problems.
TSM includes “performance indicators” and targets in such areas of tailings management, energy use, and greenhouse gas management. Work is under way on a system to assess how member companies are performing in these areas. There are also plans to address biodiversity and reclamation, among other environmental concerns.
Says MAC President Gordon Peeling: “Several years ago, Canada’s mining industry was at a crossroads. Through events here in Canada and around the world, we had seen our industry lose public trust. We knew we had to improve our performance and put in place an initiative to regain that social licence to operate. Recognition of our efforts by the Globe Foundation helps us along our path.”
The MAC has also developed best-practice manuals and training programs in tailings management and energy reporting.
