Peter Tomsett is a native of Sydney, Australia, and earned a master of science degree in mineral production management from Imperial College in London.
Tomsett joined Placer Dome in 1986 as a mining engineer with the project development group in Sydney. After several senior management positions in Australia he was appointed resident manager at the Kidston mine, a position he held for three years, and subsequently at the Osborne copper-gold mine in Queensland, where he remained for four years. In 1998, Peter was appointed general manager of investor relations for Placer Dome in Vancouver.
In April 2000, Peter returned to Australia as vice-president operations for Placer Dome Asia Pacific, and later became executive vice-president. In 2004, Peter also took on responsibility for Placer Dome Africa, which includes mines in South Africa and Tanzania.
Tomsett is a director of the Minerals Council of Australia and the Australian Gold Council. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum.
