A human resource development agreement has been signed by the Saskatchewan government’s education ministry and Minatco under which the latter will hire, train and promote “northerners” at its mining operations in the province’s north.
Similar agreements have been signed for other companies’ mining operations in the province’s north. According to the government, more than 850 northerners have been trained for employment in the mining industry (including exploration) since the strategy was initiated; this new agreement will bring that number to more than 1,000.
Minatco, a subsidiary of French company Total, has a uranium project at McClean Lake, 350 km north of La Ronge, which it hopes to have in operation in 1995.
