Inco fatality investigated

An investigation into what caused the rock fall that killed a 25-year-old miner Feb. 17 at Inco’s (TSE) Shebandowan, Ont., copper-nickel mine, is under way. It took a 12-man work crew working around the clock two days to recover the body from a pile of rock that had spilled from an ore pass on the mine’s 1,000-ft. level. According to mine manager Bill Anderson, the victim had been working with three other miners to transfer muck from the ore pass into a waiting train. “Muck ran out of the shoot and trapped one of the men,” he said.

The incident is being investigated by officials from the Ontario Ministry of Labour, the provincial police and the union representing the mine’s 400 employees. By law, all mine fatalities in Ontario are subject to a ministry of labour investigation. “When the investigation is complete, we will work with whatever we can come up with to reduce the possibility of further accidents,” said Anderson.
