That is the aim of Small Mining International, an international agency recently established in Montreal.
The initial focus of the agency, according to managing director Dr Joseph Fox, is to develop a base of information on all aspects of small mining, including technology, markets, prices, financing, regulations and policies. The agency will then assist in the formation of links between national and international organizations working with small mines by organizing meetings, seminars and training courses.
The agency plans to publish an international news magazine, a directory of organizations and guides to the small mining literature.
Small-scale mines include all mines with an annual output of 100,000 tonnes or less.
Income will be generated through membership dues, grants and the sale of services and publications. Initial funding is being provided by the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa.
