For the quarter ended March 31, Teck Corp. (TSE) reported net earnings of $14.5 million or 18 cents per share compared to $6.7 million or 6 cents a year earlier. Six-month earnings ending the same date were $31.6 million or 39 cents per share compared to $13.2 million or 12 cents a year ago.
Teck attributes the improvement to the David Bell mine at Hemlo where gold production for the year to date totalled 89,000 oz compared to 48,000 a year ago. Higher copper and zinc prices also contributed to the improved profit picture.
