Six undergrads get KEGS scholarships

Six undergraduate students at four Canadian universities will receive scholarships from the KEGS Foundation, the scholarship foundation of the Canadian Exploration Geophysical Society.

Geophysics students Garnet Knopp of the University of Calgary, Andrew McNeil, Josh Moncrieff and Karen Weitemeyer of the University of British Columbia, Karen Phillips of Memorial University, and Marisa Quinlan of Queen’s University will each receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $1,000.

McNeil, a fourth-year student at the University of British Columbia, is the initial recipient of the KEGS scholarship honouring the noted geophysicist Heikki Limion, who died last year. McNeil’s excellent academic record and interest in mining geophysics earned him the award.

Four other geophysics students will be receiving awards of $250 each to travel to technical meetings or to buy geophysical textbooks.

KEGS established the foundation in 1999, to encourage the renewal of geophysical education in Canada. The scholarships, now in their second year, are supported by donations from individuals and companies.
