Production of sodium cyanide at a new Wyoming plant was started up by FMC Corp. in November. Size of the Chicago company’s plant is 60 million lb. of the product per year. Cyanide is used in the milling stage of a gold-mining operation.
The Green River, Wyo., plant, a new distribution terminal at Battle Mountain, Nev., and a new rail- truck fleet represent a US$45-million investment by FMC. Shipment from the plant is by rail to the Battle Mountain terminal and then by truck to the gold mines. Delivery of the sodium cyanide is in liquid form.
FMC, an international manufacturer of chemicals and machinery, is a low-cost producer of soda ash at Green River. The soda ash is used to produce caustic soda, a principal raw material for sodium cyanide. A ready supply of methane, also used to make sodium cyanide, is available at the Green River site, the company says.
