Colorado-based Cyprus Minerals (NYSE) is shutting down its copper smelter in Miami, Ariz., for four months to repair damage from an incident in early November which involved a breakout of copper matte and slag from a furnace and a small fire.
The company said there were no injuries and the fire was quickly contained, although electrical wiring was damaged. No layoffs are expected as smelter employees will be involved in the furnace overhaul.
Cyprus said the shutdown represents a moving forward of a shutdown for major rebuild of the furnace originally planned for early 1992 under a previously announced modernization and expansion program.
The company expects to be able to meet customer commitments during the shutdown period.
