Mixed results for DHK

Salt Lake City, Utah-based Kennecott has released results from seven kimberlite pipe targets drilled this summer on the DHK project in the Northwest Territories. The verdict: mixed.

The latest results from the Lac de Gras project were held up until Kennecott completed private placements of $2 million in each of Dentonia Resources (VSE), Horseshoe Gold Mining (ASE) and Kettle River Resources (VSE). Also involved in the joint venture are Aber Resources (TSE), Commonwealth Gold (VSE) and SouthernEra Resources (TSE).

The most impressive results were from the Tli Kwi Cho (DO-27) target on the WO claim block where, earlier this year, 41 macrodiamonds and 141 microdiamonds were recovered from a 156.4-kg kimberlite core sample. The two latest holes, 27-18 and 27-7, returned a total of 55 macrodiamonds (greater than 0.5 mm) and 158 microdiamonds from a 157.3-kg sample. This total includes 13 macros and 24 micros from Hole 27-18 and 42 macros and 134 micros from Hole 27-7.

But a fourth hole, 27-22, returned only three macros and 14 microdiamonds from a 160-kg sample of kimberlite core from Tli Kwi Cho. George Stewart of DHK Resources said this hole represents a different phase of kimberlite which comprises a small percentage of the total pipe.

We think the results are superlative, Stewart told The Northern Miner. But we are taking quite a thump on the market, just as Dia Met did when its results were released a while ago. It may be (a result of) improved gold prices. Or part of the problem may be that no information was released on weights and sizes, which is something we may want to push for in the future. He said more results are expected shortly from other holes drilled on the Tli Kwi Cho target. Operator Kennecott is continuing delineation drilling, and rumors persist that the company is considering putting a ramp down through the pipe to take a bulk sample.

In the meantime, a fence of holes will enable the joint venture to gain a better understanding of the target, Stewart said. Some of the earlier drilling posed challenges because of the presence of rafts of granite (country rock), which are speculated to have collapsed within the pipe target. One recent hole (18-1) tested the north lobe of Tli Kwi Cho. The 265.2-kg sample returned 16 macros and 62 micros. Pipes Do-32 and Do-41 yielded only one microdiamond each from 86.8 kg and 122.1 kg of kimberlite respectively. No diamonds were reported from the treatment of a 3.8-kg sample from pipe Do-40.

Results were also reported from three pipes tested on the DHK claim block, where regional exploration is continuing.

Pipe DD-42 was tested by one hole, yielding nine macros and 31 micros from 146.4 kg of core. A hole next to this pipe yielded three micros from the treatment of 83.1 kg of kimberlite.

Three holes drilled to test the DD-17 target returned a total of 14 macros and 37 micros from 181.1 kg of core.
