MINING IN MEXICO — PROJECT ROUNDUP — Mexico boosts silver

Primary silver production in Mexico increased by 3.7% in 1992, rising to 65 million oz. from 62.7 million oz., The Silver Institute of Washington, D.C., reports in its World Silver Survey 1993.

The country is expected to produce a similar amount in 1993, despite the closure of a few mines and the threat of closure of others because of low metal prices and declining reserves.

Mexico remains the world’s top producer of the precious metal. “New silver deposits and some gold mines with byproduct silver capacity are being developed,” states the survey. “Byproduct at copper mines has increased as well, and may increase further in 1993.”

Among the top producers of silver in 1992, the U.S. was in second spot, followed by Peru, Australia and Canada.
