CIM meeting on environmental education

A Chair in Mining Environment has been created at the University of British Columbia (UBC) to address the widespread problem of acid rock drainage (ARD).

Dr. Richard Lawrence will discuss ARD at a March 26 luncheon of the Vancouver branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum. Lawrence is associate professor and chair, mining environment, at the UBC Department of Mining and Mineral Processing.

ARD occurs when sulphides react with moisture in the air to produce sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate. The B.C. Acid Mine Drainage Task Force and the national Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) program are jointly researching the problem.
