Reclamation lands contracts

Two bids by TSE-listed Reclamation Management for mine remediation and reclamation have proved successful.

The company’s U.S. subsidiary, in a joint venture with Denver-based consulting firm SRK, will remediate residential soils at the Bunker Hill “Superfund” site in northern Idaho. Soils in residential areas have been contaminated by emissions from the now-closed Bunker Hill lead-zinc smelter and by tailings from the up-stream mines. Residential yards in which lead levels exceed those allowed by the Environmental Protection Agency will be excavated. Contaminated material will be replaced with clean soil, resodded and relandscaped.

The company expects to reclaim at least 40 sites this year and estimates that up to 1,100 residential yards will be remediated over the next four to five years. Total cost: US$15-$20 million.

Reclamation Management has also been negotiating with Placer Dome to decommission its Dona Lake gold mine in Pickle Lake, Ont. While a contract has yet to be drawn up, the company hopes to begin work in August. The decommissioning would be completed a year later. The value of the contract, including demolition, site restoration and marketing of equipment, is expected to exceed $3 million.
