Toronto-based juniors Windy Mountain Explorations (ASE) and Cochise Resources (ASE) have recently completed a joint exploration program on their MacLeod Lake polymetallic project and the adjacent Eastmain River area licences of exploration north of Chibougamau, Que. The $500,000 program consisted of 25 km of linecutting and induced polarization (IP) surveys, soil sampling and 2,000 metres of drilling in 15 holes.
Work to date by the partners has identified a large zone of copper-molybdenum-gold-silver mineralization associated with the contact between the MacLeod Lake granodiorite and the older gneissic wallrocks. The 1992 exploration program was designed to further test this contact zone in several different locations. Most of the widely spaced holes drilled to test the contact contained sulphide mineralization in subeconomic quantities and/or copper-porphyry-style alteration. Some of the mineralization- alteration occurs within the granodiorite.
Referring to the drill results, geochemical sampling and IP surveys, the companies say they have identified three additional areas that have the potential to host economic mineralization. The companies feel that the identification of mineralization within the granodiorite is also a significant development.
Results of the recent program are being further evaluated to determine the next phase of exploration.
Preliminary reserves on the MacLeod Lake property total 37 million tons averaging 0.44% copper and 0.05% molybdenum (T.N.M., July 13/92).
