U.S. ROUNDUP — Remediation plan for Asarco plant

An agreement on a proposed remediation plan for the 106-year-old Globe metals processing facility and surrounding areas has been reached with the state of Colorado, Asarco (NYSE) says.

Asarco would undertake the remediation of plant and community soils, ground and surface water, and a former neutralization pond at the plant site. The plan also includes implementation of a community medical monitoring program, reimbursement of costs incurred by the state and natural resource damages. The state estimates a cost of US$31-38 million for the work program which could be under way in the new year. The 89-acre Globe plant began operations in 1886 as a gold and silver smelter.
