Papers on acid drainage invited

Acidic mine drainage is the largest single environmental problem facing the industry today. In Ontario and Quebec alone, there are 40 abandoned mine sites classified as hazardous waste sites because of acidic drainage.

The estimated cost of reclamation is $3 billion over the next 20 years.

Participants in recent efforts to find more permanent, affordable, timely and environmentally sound solutions for the prevention and control of acid mine drainage are invited to present their findings in a paper or in a poster display at the Second International Conference on the Abatement of Acidic Drainage to be held in Montreal, Sept. 16-18, 1991.

Proposals for papers should be sent to program chairman Michel Filion, Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology (CANMET), 555 Booth St., Ottawa, Ont. K1A 0G1, before June 15.

Abstracts will be selected on the basis of scientific merit, informative nature, originality, amount of new information and broad interest.
