The new belt, manufactured by Scandura of Bracebridge, Ont., and certified by the Canadian Standards Association (csa), is made of fire- retardant rubber. The belt consists of three sections totalling a length of 13,000 ft and running at an inclination of 14 degrees . It carries ore from the underground crusher to surface.
A sprinkler system and heat detectors have been added in the belt passageways to forestall another disaster. Each sprinkler head covers 90 ft of belt length and 10 ft above and 10 ft below it. A 4-inch 100-lb-per-sq-inch water line feeds the sprinkler system. Heat detectors, 440 such units all told, have been spread along the new conveyor system as well as along the old conveyors.
Noranda Minerals spent $15 million to place the E zone back into production. The mine was in a start-up period when the fire occurred. Faucher said the work to reinstate the operation was finished two months ahead of schedule and under budget; Noranda had estimated the total cost would be $20 million, including $5 million in working capital.
A clean-up operation was undertaken at the mine before the May, 1988, decision to resume production.
