Our industry support is exemplified by the formation of the Mining Research Directorate (MRD). The Northern Miner had a reporter at our recent MRD demonst ration and seminar on shotcrete at Laurentian University which was attended by about 140 mining people. This was not a closed shop session for rock mechanics engineers. The audience was made up of mainly operators — the users of rock mechanics. Furthermore, their attendance was made possible by managers who recognize the benefits of educational forums.
Mine planning at most sites involves numerical modelling of one kind or another. Entire mining sequences, such as Inco’s Creighton deep involvement, are based on modelling and subsequent monitoring of stress and displacements predicted by the modes.
Rock mechanics and ground control are an integral part of mining. More research is necessary in order to improve extraction ratios and to ensure that this is done safely.
