A cabinet shuffle not long ago at the federal level eliminated the position of mines minister. If it is, as we hope, only a temporary situation and a new Member of Parliament is to be named to the position, we suggest a logical candidate would be the elected representative for the riding of Timmins-Chapleau in northern Ontario.
The reason? Well, we couldn’t help but notice the openings of three — yes three — new gold mining operations (the Kremzar and Magino mines in the Wawa area, and a tailings reclamation project at Timmins) during October in the large riding which stretches from Iroquois Falls on the east to Lake Superior on the west.
And if that isn’t ample evidence of the mining sector’s vigor in the area, consider the prize Kidd Creek base metal mining, smelting and refining operations in the riding combined with a general tradition of mining that dates back to the early years of the century.
We reckon whoever is elected from that part of the country, should certainly know something about mining and make a good candidate for the job of mines minister.
