Nelson Bidgood, a name synonymous with the early development of the Chibougamou area, died in late April at the age of 80. For his pioneering work there he had received numerous plaques and citations from the City of Chibougamau, including the recent naming of a street there.
An early graduate of the Haileybury School of Mines, he was well known throughout the mining areas of both Ontario and Quebec.
One of his projects was the development in the mid 1950s of the Chibougamau Jaculet mine of which he was general manager. That company was subsequently absorbed into Copper Rand Chibougamau, that camp’s leading copper-gold producer.
Indeed the Bidgood name in mining goes back further to his father Fred, who promoted and developed the Bidgood Gold mine at Kirkland Lake in the 1925-30 period.
And he is survived by son F. C. (Chick) Bidgood, likewise well known in prospecting circles.
