McGill University’s department of mining and metallurgical engineering will run three professional development seminars in April and May this year, the first of which will be held April 18-29, and will focus on mineral project evaluation techniques and applications.
The other two seminars are, from May 2-6, on small-scale gold projects; mining, processing, economics and policy framework and, from May 25-27, on application of control engineering in mining.
The first seminar, in April, will consist of a balanced mixture of lectures and team exercises focussing on project assessment techniques and their application to the analysis of mineral industry-related issues. Seminar leader will be be Dr M. L. Bilodeau, of McGill.
The seminar on small-scale gold projects in May will cover technical and non-technical aspects, including the role of government, international agencies and the private sector; and geotechnical aspects, such as exploration, grade-reserve estimation, mining and processing technology. It will be led by McGill’s A. R. Laplante, and L. A. K. Quashie.
Finally, the end-of-May seminar on control engineering will show how techniques for automation of mining systems can be made manageable by practising engineers within the mining industry. It will be directed by Prof J. B. Edwards, McGill’s Webster Professor of mining robotics and automation.
