When the city of Timmins held its 75th birthday party the first three days in August, the weather was perfect — except for the day the Porcupine branch of the Prospectors and Developers Association held its fourth annual triathalon. Participants in the competition cycled, canoed and ran 55 km along the route taken by the early prospectors, more than three- quarters of a century ago, into the famous gold- mining area. It was a wet and windy day when the event was held, but that didn’t stop 84 participants from completing the route. Esso Minerals, Noranda, Pamorex, the Ontario Ministry of Northern Development and Mines and the Ontario Geological Survey all entered 2-member teams in the competition. The Ministry of Northern Development team of Lorne Luhta, resident geologist for Timmins, and Frank Ferrari were the winners, with a time of three hours, 52 minutes and 50 seconds.
Mining-related companies that helped sponsor the event were Falconbridge Ltd., Canamax Resources, Noranda Minerals, Norex Explosives and Bradley Bros. Diamond Drilling.
