The Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), an independent, non-profit organization, has pledged $1.25 million to create five research labs at the Department of Mining and Mineral Process Engineering at the University of British Columbia.
The labs form part of the Centre for Environmental Research in Metals, Minerals and Materials (CERM3), and will be devoted to: environmental quality; bio-remediation and reclamation; environmental technology; mine health and safety; and mine automation and environmental simulation.
Twenty-five faculty and 50 graduate students will work in the labs.
The CFI funding will be matched by the British Columbia Knowledge Development Fund, with additional money coming from a university grant known as the Dr. Stuart Blusson Endowment Fund, bringing the total for the project to $3.4 million. Corporate sponsorship is being sought to finance ongoing research.
The CFI was established in 1997 with money from the federal government.
