Letter to the Editor: Columns rekindle memories

I would just like to tell you how much I enjoyed Dit Holt’s series of columns on the pioneers of Elliott Lake.

I was raised in the townsite of Preston East Dome Mines. I was quite young during the backdoor staking bee, but I heard all about it as I grew up.

Many of the participants in the various aspects of the discovery and development of the Elliot Lake camp are well-known to me and were family friends. My father, who was a long-time employee of Preston (then Rio Algom), finished his career in Elliot Lake during its second life, in the late 1970s.

In addition, I had an uncle who moved from the McIntyre mine to Stanleigh in the early days and remained in the camp until he retired.
