Kvaerner reps named to Russian academy

Two employees of the Canadian branch of British-based engineering firm Kvaerner have been named to the Russian Academy of Mining Sciences for their contributions to that country’s mining industry.

Vice-President Ian McColl and consultant Alex Speirs, a former senior vice-president for the firm, were awarded medals and diplomas before 500 mining representatives at an October ceremony in Moscow.

The company has completed 16 projects in Russia, including the huge $240-million Kubaka gold and silver mine, commissioned by the gold mining division of Cyprus Amax Minerals but now owned by Kinross Gold and its Russian partners.

The Kubaka mine, which last year produced more than 500,000 oz. gold-equivalent, accounts for about 15% of Russia’s total gold output. It is the first Russian mine built by a foreign company since the 1930s.
