Newmont cuts Nevada employees

Low gold prices have forced Newmont Mining (NEM-N) to lay off more workers at its Nevada operations.

The company cut 150 jobs at its Carlin Trend and Lone Tree-Twin Creeks operations, representing 5% of its statewide workforce.

“We are reducing mining rates, changing processing schedules, and restructuring to address difficult market conditions,” says James Mullin, senior vice-president of operations. “Unfortunately, that means a reduction in staff.”

About 100 workers at the Carlin-area mines will lose their jobs; the remaining layoffs will be at the Twin Creeks-Lone Tree mines. Both hourly and salaried personnel are affected. Newmont also intends to transfer 20 employees from Nevada to the Batu Hijau copper-gold project in Indonesia.

This is the second round of Newmont layoffs this year. In the first quarter, 500 workers lost their jobs, including 450 in Nevada.
