Native-mining relationship to be explored

The Canadian Aboriginal Minerals Association will host a conference on the relationship between native Canadians and resource companies, to be held Nov. 15-17 at the Delta Bessborough Hotel is Saskatoon, Sask.

Entitled “Crosscutting Values: Aboriginal Community Development and the Mineral Industry,” the conference will feature general discussions as well as workshops focusing on how mineral exploration and development affect aboriginal communities.

Topics for discussion include: implications of the Delgamuukw decision on mining investment; promotion of community development by the mining sector; government policy; and co-operation among miners, aboriginals and environmentalists.

Workshops will include: evaluations of impact benefit statements; multi-party training strategies; environmental assessment and traditional knowledge; and past deals between native communities and the oil and gas industry.

The conference also features numerous guest speakers, including Warren Holmes, president of Falconbridge; Elijah Harper, ambassador-at-large for Project Reconciliation; and King Mhinga, vice-president of the Mineral Rights Association of the Indigenous People of South Africa.

In addition, the meeting will include a tour of the Allen mine of Saskatchewan Potash Corp.
