Mining proposals open for discussion

Proposals by the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC) and the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) designed to keep a tighter rein on publicly traded mining companies will be the focus of a conference to be held Nov. 26 at the TSE Conference Centre in Toronto.

The event, sponsored by the TSE and The Northern Miner, will be divided into a series of discussions based on recommendations made in the interim report of the Mining Standards Task Force, a committee formed by the OSC and TSE to improve accountability in the mining industry. The final report will be released in January.

Topics for discussion include: the accreditation and licensing of the “Qualified Person,” presented by Ken Grace of Micon International, Bill Pearson of the Association of Geoscientists of Ontario, and Maureen Jensen of the TSE; technical reporting and public disclosure, presented by Kathy Soden of the OSC, John Postle of Roscoe Postle Associates and Robert Cook of the TSE; best practices, presented by Gerald Harper of the Prospectors & Developers’ Association of Canada, Lynda Bloom of Analytical Solutions and Russ Calow of Lakefield Research; corporate governance, presented by John Carson of the TSE and Steve Vaughan of Aird & Berlis; monitoring and enforcement, presented by Kathy Soden, and Robert Cook and Thomas Atkinson of the TSE; and the role of analysts, presented by Catherine Gignac of Deacon Capital, Terry Ortslan of T. Orstlan & Associates and Glenn Brown of Canaccord Capital.

Rowland Fleming, president of the TSE, and Vivian Danielson, editor of The Northern Miner, will also make presentations.

The interim report of the task force will also be the topic of the next meeting of the Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, to be held Nov. 19 at the Ontario Club. John Carson is scheduled to speak at that meeting.
