OBITUARIES — Dennis Gray

Dennis Gray, chairman and chief executive officer of Antares Mining, has died of complications following surgery. He was 68.

Born in Hessle, England, in 1930, Gray emigrated to South Africa in 1951 after obtaining a degree in mining engineering from the University of Birmingham. He held positions of increasing responsibility with Blyvooruitzicht Gold Mining, Stilfontein Gold Mining, the South African Chamber of Mines, Rustenburg Platinum, Johannesburg Consolidated Investments, Elsburg Gold Mining and Consolidated Murchison. In 1972, he became chief consulting engineer and technical director for Cape Asbestos.

Gray emigrated to Canada in 1975 to take up a position as general manager for the Elliot Lake operations of Denison Mines.

In 1981, he helped found South African-based Northam Platinum, as well as launched exploration development ventures for precious and base metals in Asia and the former Soviet Union.

Gray was a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.

He is survived by wife Muriel, five children and eight grandchildren.
