Gem sale nets big profit for Rex Diamonds

A diamond recently uncovered at Rex Diamond Mining’s (CDN) Bellsbank mine in South Africa has sold for US$526,000.

The 60-carat stone, cleaved from a 92.5-carat diamond, netted US$8,760 per carat. The remaining 32-carat stone, which is said to be of equivalent quality, shape and color, is still for sale.

The find represents the fourth diamond weighing more than 60 carats the company has recovered from the mine over the past six months. The Toronto-based company paid US$16.5 million for the mine, where reserves stand at 7 million tons grading 18 carats per 100 tons.

The average value of stones from Bellsbank and Rex’s two other South African operations, Ardo and Rex, is US$240 per carat.
