Caledonia intersects mineralization at Kadola

Reverse-circulation drilling by Caledonia Mining (TSE) at its Kadola property, a 2,179-sq.-km exploration concession south of the Zambian copper belt, has encountered copper and gold mineralization.

Hole 2 encountered a 26-metre vertical interval grading 3.3% copper and 0.25 gram gold per tonne, including a 6-metre length grading 7.35% copper and 0.3 gram gold. Other results included: 1 metre grading 5.5% copper and 0.26 gram gold; a 4-metre interval grading 0.36% copper and 2.2 grams gold; and a 1-metre interval grading 0.33% copper and 1.4 grams gold.

The holes were drilled on targets located using induced-polarization (IP) and electromagnetic (EM) surveys, together with soil and rock geochemistry.

Caledonia plans to conduct more drilling on IP and EM targets on this property, as well as carry out a 10,000-metre reverse-circulation program on its Nama concession, also in the copper belt. A previous drill program there encountered cobalt and copper mineralization (T.N.M., March 4/96).

In addition, Caledonia will be conducting soil sampling at the Luamapula concession, on the northwestern boundary of Nama, to determine whether cobalt dispersion extends across the property’s boundaries.

In addition, the company has been granted two licences near Kadola: the Mpongwe and Chipepo, measuring 2,150 sq. km and 1,510 sq. km, respectively. Kadola and the two new properties cover most of the copper belt’s southern extension.

Elsewhere, Caledonia’s subsidiary, Fynegold Exploration, has contracted out a 3,000-metre drill program near its Cononish gold mine in west-central Scotland. Caledonia has also secured a US$13-million loan for plant expansion at its Filon Sur gold-silver mine in Spain.
