The Gibraltar mine has a new lease on life now that
Gibraltar was placed on care-and-maintenance in late 1998, owing to low metal prices. The open-pit mine had previously produced at a rate of about 36,000 tonnes copper and 320 tonnes molybdenum annually.
The mine’s measured and indicated sulphide resources contain 743 million tonnes grading 0.29% copper and 0.008% molybdenum, plus leachable material totalling 16.4 million tonnes at 0.2% copper. The mine plan calls for an average of 32,000 tonnes copper and 320 tonnes molybdenum to be produced annually in concentrate, plus 4,500 tonnes copper cathode.
Taseko has also carried out studies examining hydrometallurgical processing technology that could reduce the overall costs of production.
