Drilling is under way at the Pimenton gold project northeast of Santiago, Chile, as part of an exploration and development program being mounted by
The Pimenton property, which produced small amounts of gold off and on between 1991 and 1997, covers a large breccia pipe which hosts several high-grade vein systems with gold mineralization. A proven and probable reserve of 68 million tonnes grading 18.7 grams gold per tonne and 1.56% copper was outlined by earlier drilling.
The current drill campaign focuses on testing at depth in the known breccia pipe. At the same time, magnetic and induced-polarization surveys by geophysical contractor Quantec Geoscience are looking for extensions to the north of the known breccia pipe.
South American is refurbishing the mine infrastructure at Pimenton and has announced plans to bring the project back into production this year. Access roads have been built and preliminary mining started in late 2003.
