A unit of Noranda (TSE), Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining, recently reached an agreement with a Chinese agency involving the sale and transfer of reactor technology.
The Noranda reactor is a continuous smelting process and was first used at the company’s Horne smelter at Rouyn-Noranda, Que. It allows the smelter to increase its capacity, and, combined with the construction of a sulphuric acid plant, has reduced sulphur dioxide emissions.
Noranda reached an agreement after four years of negotiations with China National Nonferrous Metals Import and Export Corp.
The Noranda unit operates the Horne smelter and a copper and precious metals refinery in Montreal-East, Que.
