Indium Plant Receives Go-ahead

The metal is indium, a silver- white metal that resembles tin in physical and chemical properties. The plant will recover the indium from the dusts recovered during the zinc-refining process.

The Japanese are using indium along with tin oxide as a window de-mister. When a electrical current is applied to a piece of glass containing this indium-tin oxide, the current will flow through the glass, generating enough heat in the process to defrost the glass.

Cominco Ltd., has been producing indium from its zinc operations in Trail, B.C., since 1952. It is now building a new 30-tonne-per -year plant.
