The fabulous Goldstrike deposit of American Barrick Resources will be the topic of guest speaker Brian K. Meikle at the April 21 luncheon gathering of the CIM-Toronto Branch at the Royal York hotel.
A geology graduate of McGill University, Dr Meikle joined the Camflo Mines’ staff at Malartic, Que., in 1962 where he played a key role in the discovery of a new blind ore zone underlying the then known low grade deposit. It was that discovery, which extends to a considerable depth, that literally “made” that mine and company.
Over the next few years he advanced rapidly through various levels of responsibility from mine geologist through to mine manager, general manager and, in 1978, to vice-president operations.
When American Barrick acquired control of Camflo in 1984 Dr Meikle was retained as a senior member of a new management team that acquired the Mercur mine in Utah which it turned around dramatically.
He is likewise credited with being the key contributor towards the discovery of the remarkable Goldstrike deposit in Nevada — again a rich blind sulphide deposit underlying a low grade shallow oxidized ore zone.
As a result of that highly successful exploration program, massive reserves of this new sulphide ore have been rapidly outlined and slated for an annual production of 500,000 oz by 1992.
That new deposit is calculated to contain over 50 million tons of milling ore. Including the 25 million tons of low grade heap leach ore, current reserves now stand at more than 10 million oz of gold, a figure that is being added to at the rate of one million oz every month.
