A local consulting engineer, Ronald B. Stokes, is organizing a safari to Australia which won’t require a rifle. However, a “riffled” sluice box might help because the safari is for gem collectors and mineral enthusiasts, particularly those interested in Australian opals.
The trip will include major centers like Sydney (and its fabulous opera house), Adelaide (on the east side of the Great Australian Bight), and Expo ’88 in Brisbane. The Adelaide portion of the trip will also include a 6-night stay at Coober Pedy in an underground motel carved out of an opal formation. Why underground? Because of the fierce summer heat which, incidentally, won’t be a problem in June because it’s winter.
Several opal mines will be visited and also Ayres Rock, a gigantic red monolith at Alice Springs. And for “koalamaniacs” visitors will get to see a real koala bear at a sanctuary in Brisbane. Departure date is June 24 from Vancouver, returning on July 16.
Tour cost is estimated to be approximately $4,200(C) which includes everything but meals, gratuities etc. A deposit of $250 is required on application and the balance six weeks before departure. There is single room supplement on request and cancellation insurance. Valid Canadian passport and Australian Visa are required.
