R. Anthony (Tony) Barker, who was in charge of AMAX’s Canadian exploration activities during the late 1950s and 1960s, died recently in an automobile accident in Portugal. Born in Vancouver in 1924, Barker was a graduate of the University of British Columbia. He joined the American Metal Co. organization in 1955 while doing post-graduate studies at Columbia University and became Canadian exploration manager of the U.S.- based company in 1960.
During his tenure in Canada, he was involved in the discovery of the Heath Steele deposit in New Brunswick, the Newfoundland Zinc mine, Bredenbury Potash in Saskatchewan and the MacTung deposit in the Yukon. Moving to the United States in the ’70s, he became president of Amax Exploration, Denver, responsible for AMAX’s worldwide exploration activities.
A former member of the Engineers’ Club, Toronto, and the Vancouver University Club, he was one of the founding members of the Prospector Club in Toronto. Barker left Amax in 1982 to join Superior Oil in Houston, and retired in 1987 to pursue personal business interests. Tony Barker
