Queen’s to host symposium

Dr. Malcolm McPherson, associate dean for research and graduate studies at Virginia Tech University, will be the keynote speaker at the ninth Mine Ventilation Symposium, to be held June 8-12 at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ont.

McPherson will discuss the underground explosion at the Westray mine in Nova Scotia, which claimed 26 lives in 1992.

This is the first time the symposium will be held outside the U.S. It is organized by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME).

Workshops and more than 100 papers will be featured, as well as a trade show and social program.

WAM 2002 in Ghana

WAM 2002, the fifth West African International Mining Exhibition and Conference, is slated for July 2-5 in Accra, Ghana.

The conference will be held in conjunction with West Africa Industrial Week, which will feature exhibitions pertaining to water, the environment, sanitation, power generation and electronics.

WAM 2002 is expected to attract more than 2,600 trade visitors from Ghana and other West African countries, including Nigeria, Niger, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso and Mali.

Ghana is the world’s 10th largest producer of minerals.
