SUPPLIERS NEWS ROUNDUP — BLM awards minerals educators

Golden, Colo.-based Mineral Information Institute (MII) has received an award from the U.S. government for its efforts to educate U.S. school children about mining and minerals.

The Excellence in Education award, given by the Bureau of Land Management, cites the non-profit organization for donating “high-quality and balanced” educational material to 27,000 public school teachers across the U.S. Since it was founded in 1980, the group has funded the printing of science textbooks; gathered and distributed information on the mining regions of Alaska, Arizona and Wyoming; published a college and university guide for students considering a career in the mineral sciences; and donated kits to supplement existing science curricula.

The MII has also given out some awards of its own. The Lamp of Knowledge Awards are handed out to people and groups deemed dedicated to the promotion of mineral sciences.

Individuals recognized include Ben Severinghaus, an MII director, and Allen Raymond, publisher of Teaching K-8 Magazine. Groups recognized include the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America and the Sarah Scaife Foundation, both of which are financial contributors to the MII.
