The Canadian mining industry recognizes that innovation is the best way to increase production and lower health and safety risks. Some of the ways to achieve a safe and productive work environment are through automation and hydrogen-based power systems.
The Canada Centre for Mineral & Energy Technology (CANMET), a federal government laboratory within Natural Resources Canada, has launched a North American research consortium to develop hydrogen-based power systems for underground mine production vehicles. The consortium was developed in co-operation with Denver, Colo.-based Fuelcell Propulsion Institute. Jointly, the two organizations will research cost benefits, health and safety issues, support infrastructure, and load-haul-dump modifications and testing.
Hydrogen-based electric motor systems are simple, reliable and easier to automate than gas-powered vehicles. In addition, the elimination of diesel equipment could result in a 40% reduction in ventilation and mine-air heating volumes, translating into a 10% savings on electricity consumption per site.
