OBITUARY Charles Penney

Charles Penney, noted member of the Canadian mining industry, died recently at home in Tsawwassen, B.C. He was 76. Penney, a graduate from Queen’s University, came from Carbonear, Nfld. Among the projects in which he was involved was the Hoyle mine near Timmins, Ont., then owned 0600,0000 by Ventures, and the past-producing Golden Manitou mine in northern Quebec. With Ventures, he had worked at various properties in Canada on shaft sinking, mine development and construction in the 1940s and ’50s.

In 1964, he joined Kennecott Corp. as project manager for Alaskan operations, including an isolated copper mine 50 miles north of the Arctic circle.

In 1973, he moved to Tsawwassen and then worked for Vancouver- based Wright Engineers until he retired a decade later as manager of the mining division.
