GAC prepares to host technical conference in spring

The Geological Association of Canada (GAC) will host a technical conference during May 19-21, 1997, at the Ottawa Congress Centre in Ottawa.

Entitled “New Horizons in Earth Sciences,” the conference will consist of symposia, field trips, short courses and workshops.

The GAC is currently soliciting abstracts, which must be received no later than Jan. 15, 1997.

Symposium topics will include: the impact of Canadian geoscience over the past 50 years; geo-environmental mapping; Canadian contributions to the understanding of Latin American geology; and paleo-continental reconstruction.

Special sessions will cover such topics as: sedimentology of modern and ancient shelves; the origin and evolution of the Western Maritimes basin; the NATMAP shield margin project; radar remote-sensing and RADARSAT; atypical gold deposits; and recent advances in the Grenville Orogen.

Among the short courses and workshops offered will be: volcanic associated massive sulphide deposits; biological-mineralogical interactions; geo-environmental mapping; and geological remote sensing.

The field trips are expected to focus on areas of geological interest in Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick.
