CIM adds salt to supper at Stratford

The Toronto branch of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is planning a field trip this fall to the Sifto salt mine at Goderich, Ont.

The visit to the largest rock salt mine in North America is expected to attract interest from mining professionals interested in learning how the “stress release” room-and-pillar mining

method, hitherto employed, is being converted to more efficient bench mining.

The trip will be combined with dinner at a local restaurant and a visit to the Avon Theatre at Stratford for a performance of

Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Gondoliers.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 20, although reservations should be made before June 9. The cost is estimated at $125 per person.

While the underground tour is limited to 28 people, 47 seats are available on the bus to accommodate spouses and friends.
