Alcan wins award

Montreal-based Alcan has won an award in the category of Best Overall Company in the first edition of the International Business Awards.

The honour comes just days after Fortune magazine named the aluminum titan the world’s “most admired” metals company.

Judges for the International Business (or “Stevie”) Awards recognized Alcan for its planning and unique business mix. Alcan recently became the world’s largest aluminum producer after its 4-billion-euro takeover of France’s Pechiney. Alcan now employs 88,000 people and has operating facilities in 63 countries.

“It’s a tremendous honour for Alcan to receive an international business award, especially in the category of Best Overall Company,” says President Travis Engen.

Recipients of 67 Stevie awards were selected from almost 500 nominations received from companies and individuals in more than 30 countries

Stevie is taken from the name Stephen, which is derived from Old Greek and means “the crowned.” R.S. Owens, the same company that makes the Oscar and Emmy awards, has designed the Stevie trophy.

Judges include executives from business and media around the world. Recipients will be honoured at a ceremony in New York, N.Y., in late March.
