The Soviet Union is reported to have applied to join the World Gold Council, a lobbying and promotional group whose membership includes more than 90 non- communist mining companies. The application was made by the country’s department for precious metals and diamonds, Glavalmazzoloto. The Soviet Union is considered to be the world’s second largest gold producer after South Africa.
Also, the Soviet Union says it will mint “Glasnost-Perestroika” commemorative gold coins for the world market. The coins, of 0.999 purity, will make their debut in October.
