Brunswick’s miners take to the picket lines

Miners at Brunswick Mining and Smelting’s (TSE) lead-zinc mine near Bathurst, N.B., are on strike, following an 80% vote against the company’s contract offer. More than 1,000 members of the United Steelworkers of America walked off the job on Canada day to protest against unsatisfactory contract terms at Canada’s second largest lead-zinc producer. Brunswick had offered to boost wages by 20% over three years and increase monthly pension payments.

Meanwhile, contract talks at Cominco (TSE), Canada’s largest lead-zinc producer, continued past the June 30 deadline.
